Besides the incredibly high nutritional content, the fiber in Pines Wheat Grass is one of the most important reasons for including it in your diet. Nutritionists recommend whole foods, especially those containing high-quality vegetable fiber such as found in PINES Wheat Grass. They tell us to avoid too much juice, white flour and sugar in our diets because a lack of fiber can ironically cause some people to have colon damage and that can result in eventually not being able to handle any fiber at all.
PINES Wheat Grass Powder is 100% Pure with No Binders or Fillers. Because it is grown in a climate with a cold winter, it is much more nutritious, than other wheat grass juice powders on the market that have been grown quickly under artificial conditions inside buildings or in warm climates. It also has a much better flavor.
PINES Wheat Grass Powder is convenient, surprisingly economical way to make sure you eat green vegetables every day! Mixed with a glass of juice or a smoothie in the morning, and sprinkled on pizza or pasta in the evening, it’s a lot easier than eating 3 servings of spinach every day.
The Fun of Growing Wheatgrass in Your Kitchen?
During the past 30 years, the popularity of growing wheatgrass under extremely unnatural and crowded conditions has become a popular fad. People enjoy growing plants in their kitchen and producing their own green drink. Juice bars enjoy having trays of the unnatural wheatgrass on display. Customers enjoy watching them “harvest” and juice it.
Unfortunately, unnatural and crowded conditions and forcing the plant to grow so quickly causes a tangle of roots in the bottom of the tray, which leads to high levels of mold, bacteria and a flavor that is everything but natural. Some people report feeling sick after drinking it. Some have contracted candida mold in their digestive tract from drinking it. A few have even ended up in hospitals from drinking it. As well, without its fiber, juices pass through the digestive tract too quickly to provide nourishment for probiotic bacteria.
The Difference is Dramatic
The pictures below show the difference between tray grown wheatgrass and real wheatgrass. Tray wheatgrass is in the top picture and real wheatgrass is in the bottom picture. Both are about the same height, but the real wheatgrass is much darker green because it contains four time more chlorophyll. The roots of the real wheatgrass grow more than a foot deep in the rich glacial soil.
Proponents call this extracted juice of moldy wheatgrass a “wheatgrass shot.” The most zealous proponents have claimed that wheatgrass grown in trays is the only kind of wheatgrass that has value. Such claims are absurd considering the history. More than 80 years of testimonials and a long history of extensive research using whole food wheatgrass powder from plants grown as nature intended shows that real wheatgrass is very beneficial. The medical history was with naturally-grown, whole food wheatgrass powder and tablets, not juice from plants grown unnaturally in a tray.
Wheatgrass Shots are not Prebiotic
The popularity of “wheatgrass shots” is on a steady decline as a result of increased recognition of prebiotics. To be prebiotic, a vegetable must still contain its natural fiber. Prebiotic food supports the growth of probiotic bacteria. In other words, without fiber, probiotic bacteria do not have the environment they need to grow in the digestive tract. Probiotic bacteria are the “friendly bacteria” that are important for proper digestion and assimilation.
The importance of consuming prebiotic foods led to popularity of whole food smoothies rather than extracted juices. In recent years, juice machines are losing out to whole food blending equipment used for whole food smoothies. For added nutrition and powder, we suggest adding a scoop of whole food nutrient-dense, dark green powder from Pines to the blender.
The concept of prebiotics confirms what was understood more than 40 years ago. Juices may be harmless on an occasional basis, especially when mixed with whole foods, but they are not prebiotic. Over use of juice is not healthy. Without fiber, juices pass through the digestive tract too quickly to provide nourishment for probiotic bacteria. The disease conditions outlined by primary researchers are exasperated by removing the fiber from vegetables and fruits.
Some juices create even more problems for our health because of growing methods. The picture below shows the difference in color of real wheatgrass in juice form compared with a tray grown “wheatgrass shot.” Besides being much lighter in color, the high mold and bacteria levels of the tray grown wheatgrass result from poor growing conditions. Along with a completely unnatural way it is grown results in a terrible flavor compared to the juice from real wheatgrass. Although Pines provides the juice form of properly grown wheatgrass, our whole food tablets and powder provide essential fiber and cost less.
Whole Food Smoothies are Better than Juices
More recent research confirms the message about consuming whole foods rather than juices. A study last year by Dr. Eric Martens, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School found that extracted juice can interfere with gut ecology. Without fiber, organisms in the intestine can eat away at the protective mucosal layer of the gut wall.
Consumers are now learning about whole foods being better than juices. As a result, whole food products will grow significantly in the months and years ahead. Whole foods rather than juice help prevent disease conditions.
Q: I am allergic to wheat/gluten. Is it safe to eat Pines Wheat Grass?
A: Pines recommend you check with your doctor or allergist to be certain, but it is likely to be perfectly safe.
As you probably know, wheat allergies are usually a reaction to the gluten found in the wheat berry. Pines Wheat Grass is a vegetable, harvested before the wheat plant forms the grain (berry), and it is after during the transition from vegetable to grain that gluten begins to form.
Pines has done multiple tests on our whole leaf products and never had a detectable amount of gluten in their whole leaf wheat grass or barley grass.
Pines is very careful to harvest their wheatgrass at the jointing stage and to harvest above the joint so that no gluten is in the product. Further, they test each batch to make sure that the product can be considered gluten free. Other companies harvest their products after the jointing stage which allows gluten to be in the finished product. With Pines Wheat Grass, you can be assured their wheatgrass is being harvested at the correct time and that it has been tested to make sure they can say it is gluten free.
Q: When is the best time to take Pines' products?
A: The USDA's new MyPlate says that you should eat more vegetables than any other food and it really doesn't matter when you eat your vegetables. Other primates such as gorillas are massive and strong animals with similar digestives systems to ours, and they eat massive quantities of green. That is why nearly every health professional and even the government says vegetables should be the foundation for health.
You may want to consume Pines Wheat Grass (or Pines Barley Grass or Pines Alfalfa) between meals with a good amount of water or other liquid. This helps your body take full advantage of the nutrients without competing with other foods, and may also take the edge off your hunger so you don’t eat as much at meals. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon are great times for a green energy pick-me-up.
However, what’s most important is that you use our greens at a whatever time that is convenient for you, including before, with or after your meal. The important point is that eat plenty of greens every day. For some people, that means right away in the morning, or right before bed. That way you are sure to start (or end) your day on a healthy note.
